Sometimes you just have to state the obvious. Without funding, this ministry wouldn’t function the way it does.
We tell the ministry we’re visiting that if they can cover in-country expenses for their people, we’ll find a way to get a plane ticket. (We have a hard time asking a bunch of people in a remote village to buy $1,800 tickets when they are living on less than $100/month.) If we don’t have the funds at the time we need to buy, we unfortunately don’t go.
Because we think a fee-based training model is prohibitive for most bush churches, our salaries and regular ministry expenses are funded by contributions from individuals, churches, and businesses in the West. Background is a tax-exempt 501c3 mission organization.

Even though we function as an independent consultant and trainer, the first week that Background existed, a Board of Directors was created for personal and financial accountability. The Board has final say on the financial policies of the ministry.
